DJ Template

If you’re looking for TouchOSC/iPad stuff, go over to http://marshall-law.co.nz/touchoscipad/

I’ve been working on an open-source/free DJing template for Ableton Live 8 and the APC40, as I feel there are many people who would love to be using them together, but don’t have a clear idea of how this might be done. The template is based originally on Tom Cosm’s DJ Megaset, but has been adapted extensively since then.

Important Note #1:. Lots of people have been getting an error message when they open this template: saying that the file is corrupted. This seems to be because some browsers are breaking the file when it gets downloaded. To fix this, download the .zip package from http://github.com/willrjmarshall/AbletonDJTemplate/archives/master, then open the template inside the .zip file!

Currently the template requires the following things to run:

You WILL need to update Ableton to the latest version to open this template. I have had many people ask me why the file won’t open, and every single one of them has simply needed to update.

You can download a copy of the template from http://github.com/willrjmarshall/AbletonDJTemplate – it’s free to use, change and share as you like.

The first tutorial video is below. There have been more features since this video: I am planning to produce a second one explaining them.

    Oi,

thanks for the vid and the template. It looks so much fun.
I just have 1 problem. it says empty.wav is missing. i read your comment on that on vimeo, but still, the whole template does not work at all. i put on a track on deck 1, turn up send A to max, put on a 1 bar loop or whatever, but nothing happens..

    any idea why?

im not using touchosc, nativekontrol or an apc40

    Hi,

The crossfader inside Ableton is important: the send channels are on the right, and the main decks on the left.

Try playing with the Ableton crossfader and seeing if that helps.

Is sound coming out of deck 1 when you have a track playing in it?

oh nvm, just figured it out. its because FX1 FX2 and FX3 are set to deck B and which gives you the dry/wet effect on your apc40 xfader…

thanks a lot for this great template!!!

might look into buying an apc now :)

    Awesome!

I also recommend the NativeKontrol template: it smooths out many issues and some features simply won’t work without it.

great info, i have an APC40, ableton 8.1.1, do I need the Native part to run your template? I keep getting a piano sound like a error or something that eventually goes away. I’m pretty fluent in ableton and can’t figure this out. Best, C

You don’t need it, but it’s very useful and is recommended.

When does the sound start playing?

I download the FILE “DJ Set Template.als” that will be enough to USE FX? BUT the project is not started. may be it because of my soft ableton8.1? What version should be at ableton?

  • #8 written by Will Marshall

    You will need 8.1.1.

I have Ableton 8 and APC40 but for some reason the project wont open. Anyhow, I’m in the process of trying to make my own from scratch based off of all the great ideas I’ve found on the net so far. I’m trying to figure out a way to make the pan bank auto-map to whatever track was last selected so I can use EQ on two tracks at once. Any ideas? Is this something I will need MIDI translator for? Any help is appreciated, thanks alot!

Make sure you are using the latest version of Ableton. Today, that is 8.1.1

Got it, thanks… So the next question I have is this: I have the NativeKontrol template. Does the upgrade for this template update the top 4 knobs in user mode for the track control? And how did you go about hard coding the faders? Did you just assign them through MIDI?

  • #13 written by Will Marshall

Nope. You can just hard-code them through MIDI.

  • #14 written by Ryan

What does the upgrade actually change in the NativeKontrol template?

  • #15 written by Will Marshall

Makes the scene launch buttons momentary controls. Potentially other stuff in the future.

Hi will ive just updated to 8.1.1 and tried to download your new dj template but im having issues when i try to unzip the files using winrar saying ” files corrupted ” any ideas as to whats going on
    Cheers mate

Try 7-zip instead. Winrar is not the best piece of software.

If that fails, download the file again.

I have just followed this – “After you have purchased this preset, you can update it ($1) for improved compatibility with this template at http://www.nativekontrol.com/Upgrades.html” and payed the money but nothing happened. I didn’t download anything, just paid the money? How has it updated me if I haven’t downloaded anything?
    Cheers

Took me forever to figure out why Channel 4 wasn’t working quite right…

Channel 4 Fade to Grey was set 100%; which meant that no sound was actually coming out of channel 4.

Send A was set to 0… which means cross fader didn’t actually do anything for channel 4 track.

Maybe something happened when I opened the template… but I suspect this is how it was saved.

  • #23 written by Will Marshall

    Just committed an improved version.

Send A is now controlled by channel faders, so the send A and channel levels are always the same.

    Hi,

I am trying to download this patch but when I click on the files it just brings up a bunch of jumbled coding. Is there another link to download the template at?

    Thanks

    Hi,

That *is* the patch. For whatever reason your browser isn’t identifying it as a file properly: and loading it as text.

Right click on the download link and do something like “save as” to force it to do things properly.

    Hi Will,
thanks for your videos/packs. – just wondering how you ‘hard-wired’ the faders on the APC40 to the level controls in LIVE? – so that when you move around live, the APC40 fader stay on the track levels!
(you mentioned this in the APC40 template.
    - I guess I could find out by opening the live pack template from you – but I don’t have v.8)
    cheers

I just manually mapped them via MIDI-learn.

I have Live 8.1.1 and I try to load DJ Template.als 2010 version on Ableton and I get a message “Template.als” is corrupt [Unknown Compound Strem Type]. Don’t know what’s wrong..Do you have another link to download this template? Cheers

Lots of people have been having this issue with Ableton recently. I think it must be a problem with a common browser.

Try either A: downloading the file in another browser, or B: downloading the entire project as a zip file (the link is in the top right of the Github page), and opening DJ Template.als after you’ve unzipped the folder.

your template is soo cool, was wondering if you can incorporate some items from smart-mixing in it so we can have that pumping bass, and definitely I will donate man. cheers

    Hi,

    Love the template.

    I have some issues though.

The send a is on max on all 4 decks and when I set the Track control on send a the send a will not respond when dialing the knobs.

Also when I use the knobs assigned for send b and c the effects come right through even though I havenĀ“t set the crossfader in b position. Can you “enlighten” me as to how the effects shold work and the sends, since they dont correspond to your video.

    Thanks.

And again I TOTTALY loooove the template

    Best

    Hi mate,

I just downloaded your template, however, I went and paid the $1 upgrade and haven’t received the link to download it yet. How long does this usually take? Also I have an error message that states “media files are missing. Please click here to learn more”. I click it and it brings up 3 missing files: 1 2-Audio.wav, empty.wav, and XF_Kick_A_00. It says all 3 are missing, I tried doing an automatic search and nothing came up. Could you let me know how to fix this issue? Thanks

    Greetings all,

Will, or anyone who may know, I seem to be having some trouble with my Low EQ mapping on my standard DJ rack in Ableton Live 8. I have channels 1-4 mapped (Using the sends A bank) to the Low EQ control on each seperate channel.

The problem I am having, and one that I noticed when I first downloaded the template, is when I used my APC 40 to cut the lows, I cannot bring them back up to full volume without using my mouse. Even though my APC controller indicates the signal is maxed to the Low EQ, in Ableton it shows up as 53… instead of 64. I have the mode set to absolute in the Midi map.

I’m not sure if this is clear enough but any help would be awesome!

    Thanks. Brent…

    Any news about the missing files: 1 2-Audio.wav, empty.wav, and XF_Kick_A_00 ?

  • #40 written by Will Marshall

The first two are supposed to be missing.

The last one can be replaced with any kickdrum sample. Just drop one in :)

I will commit it in a new version when I get time!

Hi Will I am starting to use your set up however I had a quick question. It seems that the pan tab to control mid on all the tracks is somehow connected with the send a send b and send c tabs. When I click pan and adjust the mid it works great. However, when I click send a in order to control “send a” it controls send a and also for some odd reason controls the mid for the track too. It does this with all sends. I tried remapping your mid however it is under 1/52 and that is the right midi for pan but for some reason it is still connected with the sends. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Will, Thanks a lot for posting this it has been really helpful in helping me get familiar with my apc and some of the inner workings of ableton. As a means of learning more about routing and whatnot, I am trying to rebuild portions of your template into my own set. For example, I like what you have done with cross fading in the effects that are on your send racks filled with dummy clips. However, the video doesn’t show the I/O settings. I’m unable to get the audio to sound the same when cross fading and also when mixing in with an active effect. Can you please shed any insight, I’d really appreciate it!

    Mike
